[Video] Pope Francis meets with Pope Emeritus Benedict

Video - Pope Francis & Pope Benedict Meet

“At noon today, the Holy Father Francis travelled by helicopter to Castel Gandolfo to meet and have lunch with Pope emeritus Benedict XVI. Accompanying Benedict XVI to greet Pope Francis on his arrival were Bishop Marcello Semeraro of Albano, Italy, and Dr. Saverio Petrillo, director of the Pontifical Villas.

This is the first time that the Church is experiencing a meeting between the Pope and an Emeritus Pope. Even though the two have spoken by telephone several times since Pope Francis’ election as the 266th Pope ten days ago, this is the first time that they are meeting face to face. Although live coverage of the historic event will not be provided, the Press Office of the Holy See has announced that there will be an official photo of the two together in the library of the Castel Gandolfo Apostolic Palace.

After meeting privately and sharing lunch, the Holy Father Francis is scheduled to return to the Vatican this afternoon, again by helicopter.” (From News.va)

  1. Pope Benedict XVI will not be forgotten. He did a good job during his papacy. I hope people will keep Pope Benedict in their prayers for good health and well-being and for Pope Francis I for the Holy Spirit to guide him. I love them both.

  2. It didn’t occur to me until I saw this video, but Pope Francis must gain even more strength for his call knowing he is caring for Pope Emeritus Benedict by, in a way, making it possible for him to resign, taking the baton, as it were. We must recognize the tremendously difficult task it is. As we approach Holy Week it makes me extremely grateful what they’re willing to take on “in their flesh,” the physical and mental strain their role entails. I love them BOTH!

  3. I agree with Ian and Maria. They both are humble servants. It must be uneasy for Pope Benedict XVI to make decision to resign as he knew some people would criticize or even condemn him. But he loves God and church more than himself. He paved the way for us to have Pope Francis I. I don’t understand the language they spoken to each other, but I do know and feel that the God’s love between them. The pictures say more than thousands words can say. Thank God for having them both in this era.

  4. Roho Mtakatifu awaongoze katika njia zao zote!
May the Holy Spirit dwell upon them in all their ways!
Que Saint Spirit soit avec eux aux toutes leurs affaires!

  5. We’re in one! Thanks God and bless Pope Francis and Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI , may Holy spirit lead them to follow our Father’s will. We’re very blessed to have them!

  6. Could anyone be kind to translate what they say? I can only understand when Pope Francis explains to Pope Benedict that the icon is of the Holy Mother of Humbleness and that this reminded him of Pope Benedict; how humble and tender he was during his Pontificate. Thanks!
