In today’s readings leading up to Christmas Day, we capture a glimpse of the poverty and glory of two very important mothers in salvation history, Hannah and Mary. Hannah underwent a lot of anguish due to being barren, which moved her heart to fervent and relentless prayer in the temple. She then, overflowing with joy, consecrated her son to God when the miracle birth occurred.

Mary, espoused by the Holy Spirit, was also met with challenges in which she abandoned herself to the will of God when she was chosen as the mother of Christ. This miracle birth and God’s Glory came through her poverty of spirit.

Both Hannah and Mary, centuries apart, exclaim God’s faithfulness and glory, blessing the Church through Samuel and Jesus.

Let us ask God to reveal our poverty to us as we near the humble birth of our Lord! Our jobs, our physical health, family, or just suffering we endure all give us an opportunity to offer it to God. We can trade frustration and fear in for the grace that comes through His faithfulness to us and desire to glorify himself in poverty. God is a show off.

Our poverty, when united to God and done in faith, brings us closer to the love and glory that awaits us in Christ. As we prepare for the poverty of the Nativity, the smelly and broken place that the King of Kings was born, let’s bring our poverty to God and be renewed in His plan for us, trusting in the supernatural Glory He can reveal in and around us.
