The new CEO of McDonald’s Chris Kempczinski is promising a new culture for the fast food giant, and is tapping into his Catholic upbringing to do so.

In November, now-former McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook was ousted over an inappropriate relationship with an employee, along with claims of the company culture being that of a “macho guys club,” where partying and fraternizing with employees was almost celebrated among higher level executives.

Now, new CEO Chris Kempczinski, a 51-year old Catholic family man with two children, is cleaning things up at the top and promising a return to McDonald’s core values, what he calls “the bedrock of the company.”

“All of this is underpinned by our core values, which are the bedrock of our company. We must now champion and apply them more evenly across the three-legged stool to be even stronger.”

At a company townhall in November, Kempczinski spoke at length on his Catholic upbringing. He said if senior leadership team members don’t uphold their core values, then they aren’t going to be on the team anymore.

“One of the things that I do is I have to uphold the values, but I have to be able to look at every single one of my senior leadership team members and say, do I believe that they personify the values of our company that we need to be? And if they don’t, they’re not on the senior leadership team.”

He said above all, their business is about the values they hold and how they conduct ourselves.

“This is a people business and it’s really about all of you. It’s about the values that we hold dear. It’s about how we conduct ourselves.”
