There is perhaps no Catholic saint more well known that Saint Francis of Assisi. Cities, schools, hospitals, and churches around the globe are dedicated to him, but why? He can be found in gardens across the country. But he must be more than just a birdbath.
For many people in the modern world, he is a quaint, nature-loving innocuous figure, relegated to a simplification that is a pale comparison of the mystical, fiery, and inspiring historical figure that he truly was.
But a new film seeks to remove this hazy veil, and explore the real Saint Francis: a sinner and a saint, a real person with real struggles, temptations, and doubts, a person who battled darkness and searched for purpose and meaning and was often times left empty.
“Sign of Contradiction” is a new feature-length film produced by 4PM Media and The Ministry of the Wild Goose that explores Saint Francis as never before. Filmed in stunning, cinematic HD in the picturesque Italian countryside, it gives a deep insight into the heart and inspiration of this beloved Saint.
According to Father Dave Pivonka of the Wild Goose series, who is featured in the film, “Francis was a sinner and a saint who was on a lifelong journey animated by grace. He was a real person with real struggles, temptations, and doubts. He was a disciple who when all the world saw him as a fool, he stood as a sign of contradiction. This film presents Francis as a real person, not just some characterization of an animal-loving Saint from a distant time. Francis is a person who, like us, searched for purpose and meaning and was often left empty. It wasn’t until he encountered Christ that darkness and confusion were replaced with light and peace!”
