The Buffalo Bills’ recent victory against the New England Patriots on Sunday has sparked discussions about spirituality and faith within the professional sports world. This is particularly due to the fact that one of their own, NFL safety Damar Hamlin, suffered a cardiac arrest during a game last week. Hamlin’s recovery, which many have deemed as miraculous, has brought about a sense of divine intervention among the team.

Josh Allen, the Bills’ quarterback, was particularly vocal about this sentiment during a post-game interview. When asked about the team’s opening kickoff touchdown by Nyheim Hines, which was a 96-yard return, Allen said:

“You want the truth? It was spiritual. It really was. Bone-chilling. It was special. I can’t remember a play that touched me like that, I don’t think in my life. So it’s probably No. 1. It was just spiritual. And I just, I was going around, just something I was going around my teammates saying ‘God’s real.’ Like, you can’t draw that one up, write that one up any better.”

The incident involving Hamlin occurred during the first quarter of an away game against the Cincinnati Bengals on January 2nd. In videos of the injury, Hamlin can be seen tackling the opposing receiver, Tee Higgins, before collapsing straight back.

A statement released by the Bills on January 3rd confirmed that Hamlin had suffered from cardiac arrest after the hit and that his heartbeat was restored on the field. He was then transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center in an ambulance and was sedated and listed in critical condition.

The game was suspended and canceled following the incident. However, Hamlin has since recovered and even posted a photo of himself in his hospital room before last Sunday’s game with the caption “GAMETIME!!! @BuffaloBills”.

This series of events has led many to believe God was at work here, and Allen’s statement of “God’s real” serves as a reminder of the role that faith can play in the world of professional sports.
