A “slight indisposition” that caused Pope Francis to miss scheduled events in Rome sparked speculation in the media whether or not his illness was related to the mass outbreak of coronavirus currently hitting Italy. Pope Francis had been experiencing a cough, a slight fever, a sore threat, and chills.

However, the Italian newspaper Il Messaggero reported that after Pope Francis submitted to a swab test, physicians were able to confirm he was not infected with the coronavirus.

Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni did not immediately respond for comment on the report by Il Messaggero.

On Monday, Coronavirus Emergency Commissioner Angelo Borrelli said 1,835 people have contracted the virus in Italy, 149 people have recovered, and 52 people have died.
