On March 21, 1098, 21 monks walked into an inhospitable forest in Citeaux, France, to establish a new monastery. The Cistercian Order that emerged from those woods is now known for simplicity, depth and the contemplative masters it has produced: Bernard of Clairvaux, Thomas Merton and Thomas Keating, to name a few.
Today, some 7,000 Cistercians serve worldwide, including the monks of Our Lady of Eternal Happiness in Cau Ngang District, Tra Vinh Province, Vietnam. After living and praying in secret for 35 years, these Cistercians find themselves transported centuries back, to once again needing a home.
Fr. Vincent Liem Hoa Tran, Prior of the Our Lady of Eternal Happiness, said: “There is an urgent need of improving and expanding our outdated facilities: Chapel, dining hall, dormitories, and classrooms. Our current facilities are so old and even unsafe that many candidates, upon touring them, have changed their minds about joining us on account of them.”
Most of the monks do not even have a bed to sleep in. These monks who bravely carried on the faith in secret for 35 years, desperately need your help. “We are reaching out to you for help. Your generosity will not only improve our facilities but also increase the number of vocations to the Cistercian contemplative way of life,” says Fr. Vincent.
To help support the Cistercians in Vietnam, and provide the most basic of living quarters, The Pontifical Mission Societies have created MISSIO, a new and innovative Catholic crowd-funding platform that allows you to directly help provide aid for the poorest of areas.
MISSIO allows you to search through vital charity projects – ones providing for basic needs, education, safety, and others extending the Good News of the Gospel to remote areas.
Launched by Pope Francis himself, the MISSIO platform offers a direct connection to change-makers who work on the “front lines” making a difference for the poor and marginalized through direct, daily service.
Choose one of these missions of Pope Francis, and donate directly to them, knowing that 100% of your donation will go directly there. Share them on social media so others can support the projects also.
MISSIO is powered by The Pontifical Mission Societies, the Catholic Church’s official support organization for overseas missions since 1822, providing for a global network of people who are making a difference for communities in need around the globe.
