Satan hates the Blessed Virgin Mary. In fact, he has been doing everything in his power to discourage devotion to her and instill hatred for her for two millennia. Have you ever noticed that is Marian dogmas and devotions that stir the strongest reactions in those who reject the Church? Even some good Catholics are embarrassed by devotion to our Lady, and they feel we should not be too extreme in our veneration of her.

Perhaps you, too, have wondered why the Church holds the Immaculate Virgin in such high regard. Perhaps you have wonder why God has chosen to use her in the work of redemption. Today, I’d like to take a look at why the devil hates the Blessed Mother so much, and why we should be her devoted knights.

She will crush your head

The scene is the garden of Eden. The characters are God, the serpent, Adam, and Eve. The devil is smirking in triumph. He has just deceived Eve, and through her, Adam. Oh, he is proud of himself. You can almost feel the demonic pride in destruction, for he has successfully marred God’s handiwork of creation, and dragged human beings—for whom God has a special love—into death and misery.

God has appeared on the scene to clean up the mess, declaring the tragic curse that has arisen from sin—but also to proclaim the protoevangelium, the first hint at the Gospel and the devils doom.

God starts by addressing Satan, telling him he is going to eat dirt for the rest of his days. Then he reveals something that makes Satan cringe in horror—his ultimate defeat will come at the hands of a woman.

And I will establish a feud between thee and the woman, between thy offspring and hers; she is to crush thy head, while thou dost lie in ambush at her heels (Genesis 3:15, Knox)

Now, scholars argue about whether or not the pronoun is masculine or feminine in the sentence, “She is to crush thy head”—that is, whether it refers to the Virgin Mary or Jesus Christ. But I’m going to let you in on a little secret: it doesn’t matter. You see, Jesus is going to crush Satan through Mary. She is the instrument Jesus is going to wield when he destroys his ancient enemy.

With that in mind, it is just as legitimate to say, “he will crush your head” as it is to say, “she will crush your head.” It’s kind of like telling an armed assailant, “One more step and I will shoot you” and “One more step and my .44 magnum will blow you away.” They are both true statements.

So why does being defeated by Mary pain the devil so much? Why does God want to use Mary to defeat Satan? I’ll explain.

“He has put down the mighty from their seat…”

The devil hates, I mean he loathes the fact that his ultimate defeat will come at the hands of a lowly handmaiden. In a way, his proud heart could handle being defeated by God himself because he’s almighty and omnipotent. But being crushed by a little Lady from Nazareth? The thought is absolutely humiliating. It drives him crazy. For if there is one thing the most proud creature in all of creation hates, it is being humiliated.

Satan finds his defeat by the Virgin Mary humiliating because she is a woman, and women are the weaker sex (1 Peter 3:7), and he despises weakness. He loves nothing more than to see women abused, degraded, and objectified. Not to mention that our Blessed Lady is a human, and Satan hates humans because we have bodies, and he is a pure spirit that thinks bodies are disgusting. But there’s another, more profound reason Satan hates being defeated by Mary: She is his replacement in heaven

You see, Lucifer was originally God’s finest achievement. He was more beautiful, more powerful than all the other creatures that God has made. And as we all know, it went to his head. He was so gorgeous, so mighty that he really thought he could be better than God. The defining marks of Satan are pride and envy of the Almighty.

And what are the defining characteristics of our Lady? First and foremost, she is supremely humble. In fact, she is the most humble creature that has ever existed. For every ounce of pride the devil has, Mary has twice as much humility. For every drop of hate-filled and bitter envy in Satan’s black heart, Mary’s heart is filled with twice as much praise, worship, and love. For every bit of warped and destructive depravity in the devil’s soul, Mary’s heart is filled with more purity and fruitfulness. And by grace, God has made her the most exquisite and most glorious creature in all the universe—the title the devil used to claim.

In every way, the Immaculate is Satan’s polar opposite. In every way, she is his replacement—and he knows it. This Divine exchange of Mary for Satan is revealed in our Lady’s hymn of praise, the Magnificat.

My soul magnifies the Lord;
 my spirit has found joy in God, who is my Saviour,
because he has looked graciously upon the lowliness of his handmaid.
Behold, from this day forward all generations will count me blessed;
because he who is mighty, he whose name is holy, has wrought for me his wonders.
He has mercy upon those who fear him, from generation to generation;
he has done valiantly with the strength of his arm,
driving the proud astray in the conceit of their hearts;
he has put down the mighty from their seat, and exalted the lowly;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and sent the rich away empty-handed.
He has protected his servant Israel,
keeping his merciful design in remembrance,
according to the promise which he made to our forefathers,
Abraham and his posterity for evermore.

In the Magnificat, we see the role of Mary in salvation summarized beautifully:

  • Mary’s humility- “he has looked graciously on the lowliness of his handmaid”
  • God’s marvelous work of grace in her: “Because he who is mighty, he who name is holy, has wrought for me his wonders”
  • God’s casting out of Satan: “Driving the proud astray in the conceit of their hearts, he has put down the mighty from their seat”
  • His exalting of Mary in Satan’s place: “He has…exalted the lowly.”

Worst of all for Satan, his replacement in heaven is none other than the mother of the Eternal Word, Jesus Christ, whose passion and death redeemed the very humanity he has worked so hard to destroy. Her Yes to God undid the disobedience of Eve, paving the way for the saving work of the New Adam. The very weakness of Eve that Satan so scorned was replaced by the humble obedience of Mary, an obedience to the will of God that has made her powerful beyond limits.

This is the Divine plan for the defeat of his enemy. This is Satan’s humiliation and his doom.

Hasta la vista, Satan.

In case you didn’t realize it, Satan hates you. His bitter envy inspires him to destroy God’s creation, to drag it down into the abyss of hell. He would love nothing more for you—image bearer of God—to join in him in the eternal flames of the lake of fire, for misery loves company.

But fear not. The ancient serpent is powerless against the Immaculate Virgin, for in God’s plan, she is the instrument that Jesus will use to humiliate and demolish him. Do you want to crush the head of the devil in your life? Do you want to make it safely through trials, temptations, and storms to our eternal Home? The answer is simple: Call on Mary. Love her, be her devoted servant. Be her knight, her defender, her apostle. Consecrate yourself to her totally and completely—for nothing that belongs to her will be lost. As St. John Damascene said so beautifully, “To be devoted to thee, O holy Virgin, is an arm of salvation which God gives to those whom He wishes to save.”

Satan is on a rampage, wreaking as much havoc as he possibly can—because he knows his time is running out. He is afraid and he is angry, for he knows that one day very soon, he will be crushed by the Woman who makes his heart quake, the woman who “looks forth like the dawn, fair as the moon, bright as the sun, terrible as an army with banners” (Song of Solomon 6:10).

Prayer

Majestic Queen of Heaven and Mistress of the Angels,
thou didst receive from God the power and commission to crush the head of Satan;
wherefore we humbly beseech thee, send forth the legions of heaven, that, under thy command,
they may seek out all evil spirits, engage them everywhere in battle, curb their insolence,
and hurl them back into the pit of hell. “Who is like unto God?”

O good and tender Mother, thou shalt ever be our hope and the object of our love.
O Mother of God, send forth the holy Angels to defend me and drive far from me the cruel foe.
Holy Angels and Archangels, defend us and keep us.

  1. The birth of Christ was a miraculous birth according to the visions of Saint Bridget. She did indeed remain a virgin and she is the great Mother of God, Mary most holy. Thank you for the inspirational article in these times of darkness.

  2. I hope many would read this article and understand the role of Our Blessed Mother of
    Jesus, Mother of the church, and Mother of all; and her stance against Satan.
    O Mary, conceived without sin
    Pray for us, who have recourse to thee.

    Thank you for this enlightening article.

  3. Now I know why sometimes I disobey my Mother. For it was written in the article that satan loves women to be abused. Therefore, I would love to be Mother Mary’s knight, and be saved.

  4. O Most Gracious Virgin Mary, please enter into the hearts of people who want war and destruction. Please enter the hearts of families going through difficult times and planning to divorce. Hail Mary Full of Grace.

  5. I’m sorry but the woman refrenced in the bible in Revelation is actually God the Mother. Don’t get me wrong Mary was a blessed woman but we are created in the image of God. (Genesis 1:27) let US make man in OUR image in OUR likeness n mal a n female were created. So if man are than the male image of God the Father than whose image am I made of cuz I don’t look like a Father. It is actually our Heavenly Mother co creator of the universe. And I’m so sorry to say this but the Catholic Church is the synagogue of Satan. Get out while u still can. They abolished the Saturday Sabbath which is the 4th commandment they abolished the Passover and replaced it with Easter. The papacy murdered 50 million people cuz is they did not want to worship God on Sunday which is the first day of the week Not the 799th. The Roman Catholic Church changed Gods set time and laws he speaks against the mot high. Constantine was actualy the high priest of the Sun God worship.

    • The refrence you make to humans being created in the image and likeness of God is much deeper than what you try to state. God himself is relationship. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Three seperate persond, yet one true God! This is the perfect reflection of the family, the Life giving Love we are called to. A mutual exchange of Love that brings forth life, just as husband and wife bring forth life for Christ, it is in that Love when we are perfectly living out the image and likeness of God through family life… That is when we, male and female alike are coexisting in the image and likeness of God, when we are onedient and doing everything for Love of God, feeding the poor, clothing the naked, caring for the sick, doing all things for Love of God, because God is LOVE!!! The Catholic church is the Crown Jewel on earth that unites Heaven and Earth. Passover was a foreshadowing for the Eucharistic feast of Jesus our savior at mass!!! The Jews were in a ritualistic sense preparing for the real thing. Only by Jesus offering the perfect sacrafice thtough his earthly death, can he feed his children with his flesh and blood. He is the unblemished Lamb, the perfect sacrifice! He came to save us and feed us with himself, so we are always connected and have him dwelling within us. The Catholic church, did not change the laws. We live out the Jewish laws that have now been fulfilled through Christ. It is no longer a ritual that we feed on, buy our living Savior!

      • Perfectly put Sabrina if only we catholics would be as certain of their faith as you have written and displayed, can reassure each other, cam stand fast in your beliefand live yout faith but so many are not yet sure or do not understand. We pray for our brothers and sisters who have left the church from lack of understandind .

    • ROFLMAO!!!!?????
      Thanks for starting my day with a huge laugh!! I mean it! It’s been awhile since I’ve seen that many misunderstandings of the Church, her teachings and history in a single post. And you even threw in a new one, the Church is satan’s synagogue ?!??? ???? That was an awesome read!✝✝

    • Non- Sense! Poor knowledge on history & you misinterpret the Bible. How dare you to say that the Catholic Church is the synagogue of Satan? It is your church where you belong the synagogue of Satan. All your objections to Catholic Church doctrines were unintelligent, based on misunderstandings. The Church…the pillar and foundation of truth (1 Timothy 3:15)…not the late comer man made churches…not the private interpretation of Scripture. [“And I tell you, you are Peter and upon this rock, I build my Church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it. And I will give you the keys of the Kingdom of heaven and whatsoever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven and whatsoever you lose on earth will be loosed in heaven.”] (Matthew 16:18-19). Saint Paul wrote in (Romans 1:8); [“First of all, I give thanks to my God to Jesus Christ for all of you because your faith is heralded throughout the whole world.” Mary, most pure, mother of God (Luke 1:43) and mother of the Church, whom generations called ‘blessed’ (Luke 1:48), we beseech you; protect the Church, the mystical body of your Son, from the powers of evil, heresies and schisms. Let the whole world know the truth about the one, universal Church, your Son purchased by His blood. Pray for unity and peace in the Christian world, that we may worship God together with you forever and ever. Amen.

    • Gina, leave your spiritual pride while you still can. You’re so misguided by your misinterpretation of history & the facts. Christ made His Church upon solid ground but uses flawed people to run it. He saw fit to have it this way. His teaching to be perfect like His heavenly Father is perfect still holds true, so woe to those in the Church that scandalize anyone.

    • Gina, if you were aware of the Early Church Fathers you would know the Apostles changed Saturday to Sunday. I know this is hard for you to take the time and read because you are probably Sola Scriptura but remember the Bible wasn’t fully put together till end of the 3rd and beginning of the 4th Century. THAT is why Catholics are a three legged Stool, Magesterium, Tradition and the Word, Bible. The Bible Clearly teaches there is One Church not 30,000. Since the Catholic Church was the first name by Ignatius in 117 A.D I assume it is still the Church today of the Lord. In the Bible it talks of Schism and Apostasy and there is not one verse with the word REFORMATION. Enjoy!
      The Didache

      “But every Lord’s day . . . gather yourselves together and break bread, and give thanksgiving after having confessed your transgressions, that your sacrifice may be pure. But let no one that is at variance with his fellow come together with you, until they be reconciled, that your sacrifice may not be profaned” (Didache 14 [A.D. 70]).

      The Letter of Barnabas
      “We keep the eighth day [Sunday] with joyfulness, the day also on which Jesus rose again from the dead” (Letter of Barnabas 15:6–8 [A.D. 74]).
      Ignatius of Antioch
      “[T]hose who were brought up in the ancient order of things [i.e. Jews] have come to the possession of a new hope, no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in the observance of the Lord’s day, on which also our life has sprung up again by him and by his death” (Letter to the Magnesians 8 [A.D. 110]).

      Justin Martyr
      “[W]e too would observe the fleshly circumcision, and the Sabbaths, and in short all the feasts, if we did not know for what reason they were enjoined [on] you—namely, on account of your transgressions and the hardness of your heart. . . . [H]ow is it, Trypho, that we would not observe those rites which do not harm us—I speak of fleshly circumcision and Sabbaths and feasts? . . . God enjoined you to keep the Sabbath, and imposed on you other precepts for a sign, as I have already said, on account of your unrighteousness and that of your fathers . . .” (Dialogue with Trypho the Jew 18, 21 [A.D. 155]).

      “But Sunday is the day on which we all hold our common assembly, because it is the first day on which God, having wrought a change in the darkness and matter, made the world; and Jesus Christ our Savior on the same day rose from the dead” (First Apology 67 [A.D. 155]).
      Tertullian
      “[L]et him who contends that the Sabbath is still to be observed as a balm of salvation, and circumcision on the eighth day . . . teach us that, for the time past, righteous men kept the Sabbath or practiced circumcision, and were thus rendered ‘friends of God.’ For if circumcision purges a man, since God made Adam uncircumcised, why did he not circumcise him, even after his sinning, if circumcision purges? . . . Therefore, since God originated Adam uncircumcised and unobservant of the Sabbath, consequently his offspring also, Abel, offering him sacrifices, uncircumcised and unobservant of the Sabbath, was by him [God] commended [Gen. 4:1–7, Heb. 11:4]. . . . Noah also, uncircumcised—yes, and unobservant of the Sabbath—God freed from the deluge. For Enoch too, most righteous man, uncircumcised and unobservant of the Sabbath, he translated from this world, who did not first taste death in order that, being a candidate for eternal life, he might show us that we also may, without the burden of the law of Moses, please God” (An Answer to the Jews 2 [A.D. 203]).

      The Didascalia
      “The apostles further appointed: On the first day of the week let there be service, and the reading of the holy scriptures, and the oblation [sacrifice of the Mass], because on the first day of the week [i.e., Sunday] our Lord rose from the place of the dead, and on the first day of the week he arose upon the world, and on the first day of the week he ascended up to heaven, and on the first day of the week he will appear at last with the angels of heaven” (Didascalia 2 [A.D. 225]).
      Origen
      “Hence it is not possible that the [day of] rest after the Sabbath should have come into existence from the seventh [day] of our God. On the contrary, it is our Savior who, after the pattern of his own rest, caused us to be made in the likeness of his death, and hence also of his resurrection” (Commentary on John 2:28 [A.D. 229]).

      Victorinus
      “The sixth day [Friday] is called parasceve, that is to say, the preparation of the kingdom. . . . On this day also, on account of the passion of the Lord Jesus Christ, we make either a station to God or a fast. On the seventh day he rested from all his works, and blessed it, and sanctified it. On the former day we are accustomed to fast rigorously, that on the Lord’s day we may go forth to our bread with giving of thanks. And let the parasceve become a rigorous fast, lest we should appear to observe any Sabbath with the Jews . . . which Sabbath he [Christ] in his body abolished” (The Creation of the World [A.D. 300]).

      Eusebius of Caesarea
      “They [the early saints of the Old Testament] did not care about circumcision of the body, neither do we [Christians]. They did not care about observing Sabbaths, nor do we. They did not avoid certain kinds of food, neither did they regard the other distinctions which Moses first delivered to their posterity to be observed as symbols; nor do Christians of the present day do such things” (Church History 1:4:8 [A.D. 312]).

      “[T]he day of his [Christ’s] light . . . was the day of his resurrection from the dead, which they say, as being the one and only truly holy day and the Lord’s day, is better than any number of days as we ordinarily understand them, and better than the days set apart by the Mosaic law for feasts, new moons, and Sabbaths, which the apostle [Paul] teaches are the shadow of days and not days in reality” (Proof of the Gospel 4:16:186 [A.D. 319]).

      Athanasius
      “The Sabbath was the end of the first creation, the Lord’s day was the beginning of the second, in which he renewed and restored the old in the same way as he prescribed that they should formerly observe the Sabbath as a memorial of the end of the first things, so we honor the Lord’s day as being the memorial of the new creation” (On Sabbath and Circumcision 3 [A.D. 345]).

      Cyril of Jerusalem
      “Fall not away either into the sect of the Samaritans or into Judaism, for Jesus Christ has henceforth ransomed you. Stand aloof from all observance of Sabbaths and from calling any indifferent meats common or unclean” (Catechetical Lectures 4:37 [A.D. 350]).

      Council of Laodicea
      “Christians should not Judaize and should not be idle on the Sabbath, but should work on that day; they should, however, particularly reverence the Lord’s day and, if possible, not work on it, because they were Christians” (Canon 29 [A.D. 360]).
      John Chrysostom
      “[W]hen he [God] said, ‘You shall not kill’ . . . he did not add, ‘because murder is a wicked thing.’ The reason was that conscience had taught this beforehand, and he speaks thus, as to those who know and understand the point. Wherefore when he speaks to us of another commandment, not known to us by the dictate of conscience, he not only prohibits, but adds the reason. When, for instance, he gave commandment concerning the Sabbath— ‘On the seventh day you shall do no work’—he subjoined also the reason for this cessation. What was this? ‘Because on the seventh day God rested from all his works which he had begun to make’ [Ex. 20:10-11]. . . . For what purpose then, I ask, did he add a reason respecting the Sabbath, but did no such thing in regard to murder? Because this commandment was not one of the leading ones. It was not one of those which were accurately defined of our conscience, but a kind of partial and temporary one, and for this reason it was abolished afterward. But those which are necessary and uphold our life are the following: ‘You shall not kill. . . . You shall not commit adultery. . . . You shall not steal.’ On this account he adds no reason in this case, nor enters into any instruction on the matter, but is content with the bare prohibition” (Homilies on the Statutes 12:9 [A.D. 387]).

      “You have put on Christ, you have become a member of the Lord and been enrolled in the heavenly city, and you still grovel in the law [of Moses]? How is it possible for you to obtain the kingdom? Listen to Paul’s words, that the observance of the law overthrows the gospel, and learn, if you will, how this comes to pass, and tremble, and shun this pitfall. Why do you keep the Sabbath and fast with the Jews?” (Homilies on Galatians 2:17 [A.D. 395]).

      “The rite of circumcision was venerable in the Jews’ account, forasmuch as the law itself gave way thereto, and the Sabbath was less esteemed than circumcision. For that circumcision might be performed, the Sabbath was broken; but that the Sabbath might be kept, circumcision was never broken; and mark, I pray, the dispensation of God. This is found to be even more solemn than the Sabbath, as not being omitted at certain times. When then it is done away, much more is the Sabbath” (Homilies on Philippians 10 [A.D. 402]).

      The Apostolic Constitutions
      “And on the day of our Lord’s resurrection, which is the Lord’s day, meet more diligently, sending praise to God that made the universe by Jesus, and sent him to us, and condescended to let him suffer, and raised him from the dead. Otherwise what apology will he make to God who does not assemble on that day . . . in which is performed the reading of the prophets, the preaching of the gospel, the oblation of the sacrifice, the gift of the holy food” (Apostolic Constitutions 2:7:60 [A.D. 400]). 6. Satan’s hatred to our Blessed Holy Mother is so obvious nowadays threw the media, he’s using some people as tools to break down the purety of our Holy Mother such as the disgusting statues representing our Lady as a hello kitty and a super woman and many other awful figures. I pray for all those who are insullting our Holy Mother and i hope they’ll repent threw Her before it’s too late.

    SANCTA MARIA MATER DEI, ORA PRO NOBIS

  7. I don’t think I’ve given enough thought to Mary since I was a child. The article has awoken in me the love I had as a child. I thank God for my mother who had great devotion to Mary and my father who was a convert. They both instilled in us Mary’s power to crush Satan and I remember now being shown a picture of the statue where Mary has Satan crushed under foot. Oh Mary conceived without sin pray for us who have recourse to you.

  8. Thank you so much for this informative article about our Blessed Mother, the Queen of heaven and earth. You have inspired me to deepen my love, devotion and relationship with our Holy Mother of God.

  9. Ave Maria , Santa Maria Mater Dei , Mater Misericordiae ,Regina Misericordiae , OH Ever most Gracious Holy Mary Mother of God Ever Virgin, Triumph forever , Pray For us , Be our Salvation . Amen

  10. I pray for the conversion of souls for Jesus through Mary our mother. The book of revelation chapter 12 puts it this way that Mary is the mother of all those that confesses Christ.

  11. Revelation chapter 12 :17 to be specific. “the dragon was furious and went off to fight against the rest of her descendants, all those who obey God’s commandments and are faithful to the truth revealed by Jesus”. I wish you accept the truth about our mother Mary as revealed in the sacred scriptures.

  12. Our Lady Of Knock. ? Golden Rose, Queen of Ireland. All my cares and troubles cease, As I kneel with love before you. Lady of Knock my Queen of peace, ?? The woman clothed with the sun ? will shine her light on everyone. Golden Rose Queen of Ireland pray ?? for us your children Amen ☘☘☘ Marian devotion here in Ireland has always been at the centre of many homes through the praying of the Rosary. I believe in these troubled times world wide a resurgence of this powerful prayer is evident.In Ireland I have witnessed Rosary beads in the hands of people as once again, they recite this powerful prayer.The evil one must hate to see the devotion Our Blessed Mother instills, as through her intercession we offer our prayers to God almighty.

  13. To the article’s author, Sam Guzman.

    I wouldn’t say that Our Mother replaced Satan’s spot in Heaven (to paraphrase you), as the titles of Mother of God, Queen of Heaven, Queen of the Angels, etc. is so much greater than anything Lucifer would hold. I read many years ago that someone was shown an empty throne in Heaven, and was told it was Lucifer’s, but was now (at that earthly time) was reserved for St Francis of Assisi. It may have been St Francis himself that was shown this vision. Don’t remember.

  14. THANKS. YOU ARE ENLIGHTENED. AND YOUR ARTICLE IS VERY ENLIGHTENING. THAT’S SELFLESS EVANGELIZATION.

  15. Thank you for this wonderful story. I didn’t realize my devotion to Mary needs more prayers and attention.
    Mary pray for me and all my family. Amen
