Most High, all powerful, good Lord,
Yours are the praises, the glory, the honor,
and all blessing.

To You alone, Most High, do they belong,
and no man is worthy to mention Your name.

Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures,
especially through my lord Brother Sun,
who brings the day; and you give light through him.
And he is beautiful and radiant in all his splendor!
Of you, Most High, he bears the likeness.

Praise be You, my Lord, through Sister Moon
and the stars, in heaven you formed them
clear and precious and beautiful.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Wind,
and through the air, cloudy and serene,
and every kind of weather through which
You give sustenance to Your creatures.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Water,
which is very useful and humble and precious and chaste.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Brother Fire,
through whom you light the night and he is beautiful
and playful and robust and strong.

Praised be You, my Lord, through Sister Mother Earth,
who sustains us and governs us and who produces
varied fruits with colored flowers and herbs.

Praised be You, my Lord,
through those who give pardon for Your love,
and bear infirmity and tribulation.

Blessed are those who endure in peace
for by You, Most High, they shall be crowned.

Praised be You, my Lord,
through our Sister Bodily Death,
from whom no living man can escape.

Woe to those who die in mortal sin.
Blessed are those whom death will
find in Your most holy willl,
for the second death shall do them no harm.

Praise and bless my Lord,
and give Him thanks
and serve Him with great humility.

AMEN

  1. The canticle of “Brother Sun?” Really? Is this a joke? This view is heretical. Yes, God did make the world for us to enjoy in all its splendor, but the earth, sun, moon, wind, water, (bodily death?) etc. is only a part of this great world. Certainly we can thank the Lord for these things and we’ve been given stewardship of the Earth; we are to care for it. BUT, we are not EVER to give these parts of the Earth, (rocks or anything else) their own identities, complete with a sex and a worshipful capital B or S as in in Brother or Sister. This smacks of pure idol worship, which is breaking a Commandment, which indeed has a capital C.

    • Well, I am an admirer of St. Francis; he’s a very good and holy man. I was unaware that he wrote this prayer! (should have looked at the bottom! (lol) I must say that although he is our brother, and did great things for the Church and saved many souls, I stand by my comment. (sorry St. Francis)

On the basis of way of thinking and objectives in the parable of Christ Jesus, our listening cannot go so far as to see the essence of God if we are not humble, not moral and ethical, oppress and not able to share with the poor, if we are arrogant and jealous. Our essence and mind are effects of God. We have to be penitent, so we are to prepare for salvation and to see the face of God.
