The Sayings Of The Desert Fathers

In the first days of Christianity, a small number of devout men rejected the world and journeyed to the remote solitude of the desert wilderness to seek God. These hermits, ascetics, and monks, came to be known as the Desert Fathers and had a major influence on the development of Christianity.

The 1,700 year old wisdom of those ancient, rugged, remote, and mystic men, the"Apophthegmata Patrum" is collected here in "The Sayings Of The Desert Fathers".

Excerpts From 'The Sayings Of The Desert Fathers'

'This is the great work of a man: always to take the blame for his own sins before God and to expect temptation to his last breath.'

'Whoever has not experienced temptation cannot enter into the Kingdom of Heaven. 'He even added, 'Without temptations no-one can be saved.'

'I saw the snares that the enemy spreads out over the world and I said groaning, "What can get through from such snares?" Then I heard a voice saying to me, "Humility."'

'Those who renounce the world but want to keep something for themselves are torn in this way by the demons who make war on them.'
