On Saturday, twelve Polish pilgrims on their way to Medjugorje were killed when their bus crashed into a ditch.

31 people were injured – 18 seriously – and transported to hospitals in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia.

The passengers included three priests and six nuns.

A police spokesman said at 5:40 am local time about 30 miles north of Zagreb, “the bus veered off its route and slid into the ditch along the motorway.”

Croatia’s state HRT television said the most likely cause of the crash was the driver falling asleep.

After the Sunday Angelus yesterday, Pope Francis expressed his sorrow and offered his prayers for the victims.

“I learned with sorrow the news of the bus crash yesterday morning in Croatia. Several Polish pilgrims on their way to Medjugorje lost their lives and others were injured. May Our Lady intercede for them and their families.”

🙏 Pray for these pilgrims and their families!
