On Wednesday, the famous statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooking Rio de Janeiro in Brazil was illuminated with the flags of every country affected by the global COVID-19 pandemic. The 125 foot statue was also lit up with the hashtag #praytogether, translated into different languages.

At the base of the Brazilian landmark, Archbishop Orani João Tempesta of the Archdiocese of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro celebrated Mass and urged the Church the world over to pray for the sick.

To contain the spread of the coronavirus in the country which now has more than 300 confirmed cases, the Chico Mendes Institute ordered the closure of all its national parks on Tuesday. Visitors can longer come to Tijuca Forest national park where Christ the Redeemer is located.
