While giving his papal blessing to his general audience, Pope Francis took an unexpected phone call for about two minutes before telling the pilgrims there he would return shortly.

The Holy See declined to comment about the nature of the phone call. It has been described as him doing most of the talking, as if he was explaining something, seen to gesture signing something twice during the call.

After returning the Pope Paul VI Audience Hall, Pope Francis greeted the French-speaking Faithful there and extended his condolences over the murder of French priest Father Olivier Maire.

“I learned of the murder of Father Olivier Maire with great sorrow. I extend my condolences to the religious community of the Monfortians in Saint-laurent-sur-Sèvre, Vendée, to his family and to all Catholics in France. I assure you of my participation in mourning and my spiritual closeness.”

Vatican News reported recent autopsy results show Father Maire died from, according to the prosecutor in the La-Roche-sur-Yon commune.

“The victim had six lesions, all to the head, inflicted by violent blows.”
