Director of the Holy See Press Office Mr. Matteo Bruni shared Pope Francis learned “with sorrow” news of the “death of Burkhard Scheffler last night near the colonnade of Saint Peter’s Basilica.”
“Mr. Scheffler was born in 1961 in Germany and lived on the streets of Rome, cared for by the charity and assistance efforts of the Dicastery for the Service of Charity.
Unfortunately, the past few nights of cold and rain contributed to the fragile nature of his condition, already affected by homelessness.”
Bruni explained that “in his prayer, the Pope remembers Burkhard and all those who are forced to live without a home, in Rome and around the world, and invites the faithful to join him.”
The Papal Almoner Cardinal Krajewski entrusted Mr. Burkard to the intercession of Saint Francis after learning of his passing.
