In honor of the Extraordinary Missionary Month of October, Pope Francis released his prayer intention calling for a missionary “spring” in the Church.
Pope Francis designated October an Extraordinary Missionary Month, celebrating the 100th anniversary of Pope Benedict XV’s Apostolic Letter Maximum illud which redefined the Church’s missionary role. The month’s chosen theme is “Baptized and Sent: The Church of Christ on Mission in the World.”
“The initiative aims to awaken the awareness of the meaning of mission and reinvigorate the sense of responsibility for proclaiming the Gospel with new enthusiasm.”
In honor of the month, Pope Francis shared his video prayer intention for the month of October, that we pray “the breath of the Holy Spirit engender a new missionary ‘spring’ in the Church.” Learn more about on the Extraordinary Missionary Month on the Vatican’s official website here.
Pope Francis’ Worldwide Prayer Network of the Apostleship of Prayer developed “The Pope Video” initiative as a way to spread the Holy Father’s monthly prayer intentions on the challenges humanity faces in a video based format.

“Today, a new impulse to the Church’s missionary activity is needed to face the challenge of proclaiming Jesus and his death and resurrection.
Reaching the peripheries – the human, cultural, and religious settings still foreign to the Gospel: this is what we call the “missio ad gentes”.
We must also remember that the heart of the Church’s mission is prayer.
In this Extraordinary Missionary Month, let us pray that the Holy Spirit may engender a new missionary ‘spring’ for all those baptized and sent by Christ’s Church.“
