In an ambitious new project, the Vatican and Microsoft have partnered to create a highly detailed 3D digital model, or ‘digital twin,’ of St. Peter’s Basilica.
Using advanced AI and photogrammetry, Microsoft captured 1000s of high-resolution images with drones, cameras and lasers. Their resulting digital model allows visitors worldwide to explore the basilica’s architecture and artwork online, even previously inaccessible areas.
Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, the basilica’s archpriest, explained that the “digital ecosystem,” launching Dec. 1, will help visitors “experience the Basilica in its spiritual essence.” The platform aims to support both physical and virtual pilgrimages, offering immersive features through a dedicated app, virtual exhibits and real-time visitor updates.
Brad Smith, Microsoft’s president, said that their “AI for Good” lab played a central role, using advanced algorithms to detect structural issues, such as cracks and missing mosaic tiles.
In January, a Minecraft Education version of the basilica will also launch, bringing the model to younger audiences through a virtual platform.
