The Vatican has released Pope Francis’ Lenten message for 2025 titled “Let Us Journey Together in Hope.”
Dated February 6, his message emphasizes conversion, communal unity and faith in God’s promise of salvation. The Holy Father’s reflection aligns with the Jubilee Year’s theme, “Pilgrims of Hope,” and is structured into three key calls: journeying, journeying together and journeying in hope.
Pope Francis first urges Catholics to view Lent as a time of spiritual pilgrimage, drawing parallels to the Israelites’ journey from slavery to freedom. He calls for self-examination, asking, “Am I really on a journey, or am I standing still, not moving, either immobilized by fear and hopelessness or reluctant to move out of my comfort zone?” A central point in his message is the comparison of one’s life to that of migrants and refugees, encouraging empathy and a renewed awareness of human dignity.
Pope Francis then emphasizes the importance of synodality—journeying together as a Church. He warns against isolation and self-centeredness, urging Christians to foster inclusion, listen to one another and build unity. “Whether we make others feel a part of the community or keep them at a distance,” he asks.
Finally, Pope Francis describes hope as “the sure and steadfast anchor of the soul.” He reassures the faithful of God’s unfailing love. The message calls for trust in God’s mercy and a renewed commitment to justice, fraternity, and care for creation.
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, March 5, and concludes on Holy Thursday, April 17, leading to Easter Sunday on April 20. Traditionally, the Pope presides over the Ash Wednesday Mass at the Basilica of Santa Sabina in Rome, though his participation remains uncertain due to recent health concerns.
Pope Francis concluded his message by invoking the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary, praying that she may guide the faithful throughout their Lenten journey toward Easter’s joy.
