In a phone exchange late Thursday afternoon, Pope Francis engaged in dialogue with Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to navigate the escalating situation in the Gaza Strip, Jerusalem, and the West Bank.

Pope Francis, known for his diplomatic acumen, conveyed a message of solidarity and concern over the recent surge in violence.

President Abbas expressed his gratitude for the Pope’s commitment to peace, highlighting the Pope’s efforts as instrumental in advocating for peace on a global scale. Abbas urged, “the Vatican’s ongoing support is crucial,” especially in securing a ceasefire to prevent further civilian casualties.

The conversation took a somber tone as Abbas detailed the grave consequences of the conflict on the civilian population, calling for the immediate cessation of “savage attacks” on innocents. He highlighted the dire need for consistent humanitarian aid channels, ensuring the vital flow of medical supplies, food, water, and electricity to the affected areas.

In a heartfelt response, Pope Francis lamented the loss of life, saying, “achieving peace and ending the war in this region and around the world” are urgent priorities. He reassured Abbas of his continuous engagement, promising to maintain a consultative role.

Pray for peace!
