A Brooklyn priest who previously permitted pop singer Sabrina Carpenter to film a music video in his church has been placed on leave following allegations of financial misconduct involving nearly $2 million.

The Diocese of Brooklyn announced that Msgr. Jamie Gigantiello has been relieved of his pastoral duties at Our Lady of Mount Carmel–Annunciation Parish after an investigation commissioned by the diocese uncovered that Gigantiello allegedly transferred $1.9 million in parish funds to accounts associated with Frank Carone, former chief of staff to New York City Mayor Eric Adams.

These transfers were reportedly made without the necessary approvals, violating diocesan policies and protocols. Additionally, it was revealed that Gigantiello may have used a church credit card for substantial personal expenses.

In response to these findings, Bishop Brennan has appointed Bishop Witold Mroziewski as the new administrator of the parish. Gigantiello’s future role within the parish will be determined pending the outcome of the ongoing investigations.

“The Diocese is fully committed to cooperating with law enforcement in all investigations,” stated Bishop Robert Brennan.

The Diocese also emphasized its commitment to maintaining the integrity of church operations and ensuring that all actions align with its policies and the expectations of its parishioners.
