Italian authorities have opened an investigation into online sales of relics said to belong to Blessed Carlo Acutis, soon to be canonized as the Church’s first millennial saint.
The inquiry by the Perugia Public Prosecutor’s Office began after Bishop Domenico Sorrentino of Assisi filed a formal complaint over an online auction that involved alleged relics of Acutis, including a lock of his hair.
The relic reportedly attracted bids of over $2,000 before the auction was taken down.
Bishop Sorrentino has publicly condemned these auctions, saying that the Church strictly prohibits the sale of relics under canon law.
Authorities are currently determining the authenticity of the relics. Bishop Sorrentino said that regardless of authenticity, these auctions are not only possible fraud but also a profound disrespect toward the Church and faithful.
Known as the patron of the internet, Acutis’ relics, including a piece of his heart, recently toured the US.
