Pope Francis celebrated the 12th anniversary of his election to the papacy on Thursday from Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for double pneumonia for the past month.
The 88-year-old pontiff, whose medical condition remains stable but complex, celebrated with hospital staff who gave him a cake.
The Vatican recently confirmed that Pope Francis is continuing to undergo respiratory therapy and high-flow oxygen treatment during the day, with non-invasive mechanical ventilation at night.
Despite the prolonged hospitalization, he has maintained an active role in the Church, signing documents, following the annual Lenten retreat of the Roman Curia and engaging with Vatican officials.
Messages of support have also poured in from around the world for his recovery and to celebrate the occasion. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio extended congratulations on behalf of US Catholics, offering prayers for the Holy Father’s health. The Argentine bishops’ conference also organized special Masses across Pope Francis’ home country.
No date has been announced for his release from the hospital, but recent medical updates indicate a gradual improvement.
Since March 13, 2013, Jorge Mario Bergoglio—now Pope Francis—has led the Church. His papacy has been marked by outreach to the marginalized, financial reforms and the synodal process. It also coincides with the current Jubilee Year, expected to draw millions of pilgrims to Rome.
Please pray for the health of Pope Francis and his intentions! 🙏
