In a packed gathering at St. Peter’s Square this past Sunday, Pope Francis shared a powerful message.

He spoke about Jesus’s prayer, where God’s secrets were told to those with childlike innocence and open hearts. He reminded us that God’s true love is seen in the freeing and saving of people. He also warned that trying to look big and important can block our understanding of God’s works.

Using examples from Jesus’s time, he pointed out the rich cities of Chorazin, Bethsaida and Capernaum. Even though Jesus performed many miracles there, the people didn’t get the deep meaning. They saw the miracles as nothing more than hot gossip, and soon lost interest. Pope Francis highlighted the difference between such people and the humble ones who accept God’s love and stand amazed at His miracles.

The Pope encouraged everyone to notice the everyday miracles in their lives. Like a photo captures a moment, we should capture these divine acts in our hearts and minds, letting them radiate from within.

Pope Francis also posed some thoughtful questions: Amidst the flood of daily news, do we stop to recognize the good that God does? Do we watch in wonder, like children, at the quiet ways the world is being made better? And do we remember to thank God each day for His works?

“The message, then, is clear. Let us not forget this. God reveals himself by liberating and healing the human person, with a gratuitous love that saves. This is why Jesus thanks his Father, because his greatness consists in his love and he never works outside of love.”

He prayed for us all to be able to marvel at God’s love and thank Him simply and humbly.

Pope Francis also made an exciting announcement – 21 new cardinals are going to be named in a ceremony on September 30.
