In a private and unannounced meeting on August 15, Pope Francis welcomed Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his fiancée, Lauren Sánchez, to the Vatican.

The encounter, which took place at Pope Francis’ Casa Santa Marta residence, was not listed on the official Vatican agenda.

Their meeting brought together their shared concerns for humanity and the environment.

Lauren Sánchez, who serves as Vice Chair of the Bezos Earth Fund, shared details on her social media. She described the Pope’s “wisdom, warmth, and humor” as deeply impactful, noting his reminder “not to take life too seriously.”

The discussion reportedly centered on the urgent need for climate action, a cause both Bezos and the Pope are passionate about. Sánchez mentioned that Pope Francis’ “belief in finding beauty and meaning in everything we do” left a significant impression on her.

During the visit, Sánchez expressed gratitude for the Pope’s gentle wisdom and his encouragement for priests to engage with poetry and literature. She shared “I love that he encourages priests to read poetry and literature to stay connected with the human spirit.”
