Pope Francis has affirmed the Vatican’s stance on blessings for same-sex couples and those in “irregular situations,” emphasizing that moral perfection is not a prerequisite.

The Holy Father’s remarks came during the conclusion of the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith’s (DDF) annual plenary assembly, shedding light on the recently issued document Fiducia Supplicans.

This document, dating back to December 18, 2023, endorses nonliturgical blessings, particularly focusing on those who have faced diverse life experiences, including divorce and remarriage.

Pope Francis clarified that the essence of these blessings lies in their pastoral and spontaneous nature, aiming to reflect the Church’s compassion and pastoral support. He stressed, “These blessings, outside of any liturgical context and form, do not require moral perfection to be received.” He further said that the blessings are directed at individuals, not their unions, stating, “When a couple spontaneously approaches to ask for it, the union is not blessed, but simply the people who have requested it together.”

This clarification comes amidst debates and concerns surrounding the interpretation of Fiducia Supplicans, where many expressed apprehensions about the document’s potential to sow confusion.

Moreover, the pontiff underscored the broader mission of the DDF, mentioning the structural reforms he instituted in 2022, which streamlined the Dicastery’s focus on doctrine and discipline. He also highlighted the significance of the sacraments, human dignity, and the proclamation of faith, particularly emphasizing the pressing need for the Church to resonate with contemporary society’s quest for meaning and spiritual direction.

Concluding, Pope Francis reiterated the Church’s commitment to human dignity and the nurturing of faith in today’s world, while also emphasizing the importance of blessings as a manifestation of the Church’s closeness and support to its followers in various life situations.

Pray with Pope Francis!
