Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), has released a statement following the presidential election results.
In his message, Archbishop Broglio congratulated President-elect Trump and all officials elected at national, state and local levels. He said “we rejoice in our ability to transition peacefully from one government to the next.”
Emphasizing the Church’s neutrality, he said that “the Catholic Church is not aligned with any political party,” and expressed the bishops’ commitment to working with elected leaders to “advance the common good of all.”
The Archbishop called on Americans to “treat each other with charity, respect, and civility,” even amid disagreements on public policy. He reminded the faithful of their duty to be concerned for those outside national borders and to offer assistance to all.
He concluded by urging prayers for President-elect Trump and all leaders, asking for the intercession of the Blessed Mother to guide the nation in upholding the dignity of every person, especially “the most vulnerable among us, including the unborn, the poor, the stranger, the elderly and infirm, and migrants.”
Pray below the “Prayer After an Election” from the USCCB:
God of all nations,
Father of the human family,
we give you thanks for the freedom we exercise
and the many blessings of democracy we enjoy
in these United States of America.
We ask for your protection and guidance
for all who devote themselves to the common good,
working for justice and peace at home and around the world.
We lift up all our duly elected leaders and public servants,
those who will serve us as president, as legislators and judges,
those in the military and law enforcement.
Heal us from our differences and unite us, O Lord,
with a common purpose, dedication, and commitment to achieve liberty and justice
in the years ahead for all people,
and especially those who are most vulnerable in our midst.
Amen.
