The Vatican has confirmed that Pope Francis is suffering from bilateral pneumonia following a series of medical evaluations at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. His condition, described as complex, has led to adjustments in his treatment plan.
According to a statement from the Holy See Press Office, a CT scan conducted on Tuesday revealed the presence of pneumonia in both lungs. The diagnosis comes after the pontiff was initially admitted on February 14 for bronchitis, which later developed into a polymicrobial respiratory tract infection. The Vatican indicated that his treatment now includes a combination of cortisone and antibiotic therapies.
Pope Francis, 88, has a history of respiratory complications, including the partial removal of a lung in his youth. Despite the severity of his condition, the Vatican emphasized that the pope remains in good spirits. He has spent his hospital stay alternating between rest, prayer and reading.
The hospitalization has resulted in the cancellation of several upcoming Vatican events. The Pope will not preside over the scheduled Mass for the Jubilee of Deacons on February 23 and his weekly general audience set for February 19 has also been canceled.
This marks the fourth time Pope Francis has been hospitalized at Gemelli.
The Vatican has not provided an estimated timeline for the pope’s discharge but assured the faithful that he remains under close medical supervision. The Holy See has urged continued prayers for his recovery.
Please pray for the health of Pope Francis and his intentions!
