In a heartrending act of violence, a Catholic congregation in Essakane, Burkina Faso, was devastated by a terrorist attack during Sunday Mass, resulting in the loss of at least 15 lives.

The village, nestled in the Sahel region close to the Mali and Niger borders, witnessed this attack as confirmed by the Diocese of Dori. The attack also left two individuals injured.

The Diocese’s statement conveyed their sorrow and urged prayer “for the eternal rest of those who died in faith, for the healing of the injured, and for comfort to the bereaved hearts.”

Bishop Laurent Dabiré of Dori, reflecting on the tragedy, shared the Catholic community’s need for unity, solidarity, and dialogue. “While our country was once renowned for its tradition of peaceful interreligious dialogue,” he lamented, saying “these terrorist groups aim to divide the population.”

He called for prayers for the conversion of those spreading death and chaos in the nation, that this Lent might usher in peace and security for the country.

Pope Francis also expressed his sorrow over the “tragic terrorist attack” in a letter to Bishop Laurent, and prayed for the deceased, “entrusting them to God’s mercy, and for the healing of the injured.”

Since 2015, Burkina Faso has been ensnared in violence, with terrorist groups laying claim to vast territories, especially in the northern regions. The violence has led to over 2 million people being displaced and thousands of lives lost. The Christian minority, amidst this turmoil, faces dire threats, with communities disappearing or teetering on the brink of extinction.

Pray for peace in Burkina Faso!
