Throughout his life, Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen was renowned as a theologian and philosopher, but was most iconic for being a rarity in the realm of Catholic preaching. As a host on nighttime radio and later two television programs, “the golden-voiced Msgr. Fulton J. Sheen, U.S. Catholicism’s famed proselytizer,” had weekly audiences of up to 30 million.

The Catholic Hour, his weekly Sunday-night radio broadcast, featured heavy topics like communism, racism, equal rights, and the role of the Church in government.

One of his most celebrated sermons was given on the show on January 26th, 1947. In it, Sheen delves into the “Signs of Our Times,” like The Great Apostasy, The Chastisement, and what the Antichrist will be like.

Our Lord tells us that he will be so much like Himself that he would deceive even the elect — and certainly no devil ever seen in picture books could deceive even the elect.

He will not wear red tights, nor vomit sulfur, nor carry a trident nor wave an arrowed tail.

In the midst of all his seeming love for humanity and his glib talk of freedom and equality, he will have one great secret which he will tell to no one: he will not believe in God.”
