Can raising children to be virtuous be as simple as learning how to fix the leaky faucet?
On this episode of “The Catholic Gentleman,” John Heinen and exorcist priest Fr. Chad Ripperger discuss how to raise children in today’s society.
Drawing from his experiences growing up in his father’s diesel mechanic shop and as an exorcist, Fr. Ripperger says grounding children in reality and responsibility will help them grow into strong, capable adults!
He explains that practical tasks are a great way to instill that sense of responsibility. “Make them be responsible, put them in charge of something that’s often physically difficult and requires a bit of a grind,” he says.
Fr. Ripperger shares how his father taught him to do basic repairs and use common tools. “He would instruct me how to do it and make me actually do it if it was something that he thought I was capable of doing.” He says this equipped him with important life skills, but also gave a sense of accomplishment and self-reliance.
By giving them real responsibilities, children learn to be accountable and develop a strong work ethic. “There’s a kind of a sacrifice in the sense that you have to kind of put away your bodily comfort and things like that.” This builds character and appreciation for the fruits of their labor, he says.
However, parents must also guide their children firmly yet lovingly by setting clear expectations and being consistent. “You have to put your compassion at the door because if you don’t do that it’s going to affect your judgment,” he says. Ensuring they understand the consequences of their actions–both good and bad–will help them learn from mistakes and develop a strong moral compass.
The gentlemen say that grounding children in reality and responsibility sets them up for a virtuous life!
