Did you know there is a scapular that keeps the Sacred Heart of Jesus close to your own?

The Scapular of the Sacred Heart began with Estelle Faguette, a humble French domestic servant who, in 1876, was granted a series of apparitions by the Blessed Virgin Mary in Pellevoisin, France.

During one of these encounters, the Virgin Mary revealed the design of this special scapular and encouraged its use as a means of drawing closer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. It features the Sacred Heart of Jesus on the front panel and the Virgin Mary as Mother of Mercy on the back. The Virgin emphasized that this scapular would be a source of grace for those who wore it with confidence.

The Scapular of the Sacred Heart, approved by the Church in 1900, continues the Devotion to the Sacred Heart that began in the 17th century with St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation Sister in France. She was instrumental in spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart, famously distributing ‘badges’ bearing its image. These badges became popular symbols of protection and devotion, especially during times of plague and persecution.

To be invested in the Scapular of the Sacred Heart, one must be enrolled by a priest using the approved Church formula. Enrollment is a commitment to live in accordance with the love and mercy of the Sacred Heart. Those who wear the Scapular of the Sacred Heart are invited to meditate on the great love of Jesus and to make reparation for the offenses committed against Him.

Once invested, you may receive various spiritual benefits, including the graces promised by Our Lady during her apparitions to Estelle Faguette. These include special protection, the strength to resist temptation, and the ability to grow in your love for Jesus and Mary. The scapular also serves as a tangible sign of your devotion, a constant reminder to keep the Sacred Heart close, and to trust in the boundless mercy it represents.

Whether you are new to this devotion or have worn the scapular for years, remember the promise that comes with it: to keep the Sacred Heart close, to love and be loved by Jesus, and to draw ever nearer to His divine mercy.

Our Lady of Pellevoisin, pray for us!

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!

🙏
