Today’s Scripture reading is the key to understanding the mystery of the entire cosmos and the mystery of the human person. That may seem like a bold statement, but the moment you drink deeply of the reality that God is a “good Father” is the moment when your worldview transforms. I believe St. Therese, the Little Flower was proclaimed “the greatest saint of modern times” precisely because she is the one who understood most simply and most profoundly the Fatherhood of God.

Theologically speaking, God gained nothing in creating the world and creating you and me. Within the Trinity there was already infinite love and infinite glory. So why create? Simply speaking, God longs to pour out His love, pour out His glory and share His superabundance with us.

I am a proud father with three beautiful daughters of 7, 4, and 4 months. No matter how much they test my patience during the day, I love them with an intense love. When I stand over them at night and gaze at them as they sleep, they are just perfect. Words cannot describe the heart of a father as I forgive them, bless them and think about ways I can help them be better tomorrow. They are each different. It’s in these moments with the imperfection of my human fatherhood, I can get lost in the Fatherhood of God! Oh how He loves us!

Think about the love a parent can hold for their child; now multiply times infinity. God. Is. Love!

As you journey through Lent, let the love of God penetrate you deeply. When we begin to understand how much God loves it changes everything. More than penance (which is necessary), more than piety (which is necessary), Love transforms to the core.

The Good Father longs to shower His divine gifts upon us if we but ask. When Lent reaches its climax on Good Friday, we see this become tangible as the good thief dares to ask Our Lord, “Jesus remember me when you come into your Kingdom.”

“Today you will be with me in paradise!”
