Cardinal Louis Raphaël Sako, Patriarch of the Chaldean Catholic Church, has reiterated the Church’s stance against blessing same-sex unions, declaring them inconsistent with Catholic teaching.

“The Chaldean Church in Iraq and worldwide does not consider same-sex unions to be marriages,” he wrote on July 22, following the Chaldean Synod’s deliberations.

The Synod’s decision explained that the only legitimate form of marriage is between a man and a woman, preserving marriage as one of the seven sacraments.

“The Church refuses to bless same-sex unions, maintaining the sanctity of marriage as one of the seven sacraments,” the statement declared.

While the Vatican’s Fiducia Supplicans allows non-sacramental blessings for irregular couples, the Chaldean Catholic Church maintains its commitment to sacramental marriage blessings.

“The Church views marriage between a male and a female as the legitimate and correct form of marriage for building a family,” Cardinal Sako reiterated.
