Ohio’s Catholic bishops have issued a letter urging respect and dignity for Haitian immigrants in Springfield.
The bishops’ message responds to unfounded rumors about the immigrants, which have led to threats and disruptions in local schools.
“These negative sentiments are exacerbated by gossip, which can spread quickly across social media with no concern for the truth,” they wrote.
They noted that the Haitian newcomers have fled violence and poverty and have been granted Temporary Protected Status by the government.
The letter was signed by bishops from all six Catholic dioceses in Ohio.
“We ask for prayers and support for all the people of Springfield as they integrate their new Haitian neighbors,” the letter said.
The bishops issued the letter ahead of the World Day of Migrants and Refugees on September 29, encouraging reflection on welcoming those in need.
