The Vatican has announced the theme for World Youth Day 2027 in Seoul, South Korea: “Take courage! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).
At a Vatican press conference on September 24, Cardinal Kevin Farrell unveiled the theme and logo, which focuses on the courage stemming from Jesus’ victory.
“This theme resonates deeply with the challenges confronting today’s youth,” wrote Bishop Paul Kyung Sang Lee, general coordinator for WYD Seoul 2027.
World Youth Day 2027 will be the first held in a predominantly non-Christian country, with Catholics comprising about 11% of South Korea’s population.
Archbishop Peter Soon-Taick Chung expressed hopes for interreligious dialogue, saying “we definitely have concrete plans to include people from different religious backgrounds—and those who have no religion.”
On November 24, during Mass at St. Peter’s Basilica, the symbols of World Youth Day will be handed over to Korean youth.
Cardinal Farrell also mentioned that around 1,000 young Koreans are expected to attend the Jubilee of Youth in Rome in 2025.
