Pope Francis has allegedly made remarks about gossip during a closed-door meeting with newly ordained priests in Rome.

According to the blog Silere Non Possum, which claims to have a recording of the conversation, the Pope advised the priests against “badmouthing” in parishes and congregations, stating, “Gossip is a women’s thing.” He purportedly added, “We wear the trousers, we have to say things.”

This alleged statement comes shortly after the Pope’s apology for using a homophobic slur in a different conversation with Italian bishops.

Marco Perfetti, director of Silere Non Possum, asserted that the blog has audio evidence of the Pope’s remarks, recorded by more than one participant at the event. “We have the recording of the pope saying this,” Perfetti said.

The Vatican newspaper reported that the meeting focused on the challenges of priestly life, including serving the sick with “closeness, compassion, and tenderness.”
