Pope Francis has criticized President Donald Trump’s proposed immigration policies, describing plans for mass deportations of undocumented immigrants as a “disgrace.”

The comments were made during an interview on the Italian TV program Che Tempo Che Fa on January 19.

“If it is true, it will be a disgrace, because it makes the poor wretches who have nothing pay the price of imbalance,” Pope Francis said.

The pope’s remarks come as the Trump administration reportedly plans large-scale deportations. He has consistently advocated for migrant rights and emphasized their dignity throughout his papacy.

During the same program, the pope reiterated his belief that governments should prioritize integrating migrants and addressing root causes of migration. “This is not how things are resolved,” he said.

The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has also expressed opposition to the deportation plans. Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago labeled them “deeply disturbing,” highlighting their impact on human dignity and immigrant families.

Pope Francis sent prayers for Trump’s new term: “I ask Almighty God to grant you wisdom, strength, and protection in the exercise of your high duties,” he prayed, “and to guide your efforts in promoting peace and reconciliation among peoples.”
