In a significant breakthrough, police in Bavaria have arrested a suspect in connection to the theft of a pectoral cross gifted by the late Pope Benedict XVI.

The revered relic, which once adorned the chest of the Pope during significant ceremonies, was taken from St. Oswald’s Church in Traunstein earlier this year.

Investigators detailed the arrest of the 53-year-old suspect, identified after forensic evidence was matched with international databases. “The evaluated traces could be allocated to a specific person,” says the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office.

While the cross remains at large, the story of its theft has captivated many due to the emotional and historical ties.

Born in Marktl am Inn, Pope Benedict XVI’s spiritual journey began in the very community where the theft occurred. He later bequeathed the cross to St. Oswald’s Church after his retirement in 2013.

The apprehended suspect isn’t new to the world of crime. Reports suggest he’s been active since the ’90s, with a trail of property crimes across Europe. Reflecting on his criminal history, German media quote, “He has been in prison in several European countries.”

The search for the stolen cross intensifies as authorities hint at a possible sentence reduction if it’s returned. “A significant sentence reduction is in prospect if the pectoral is returned,” stated Dr. Martin Freudling of the public prosecutor’s office.

With a €1,000 reward for information leading to the cross’s recovery, the town remains hopeful.

The Catholic community in Traunstein is fervently praying for the return of their cherished relic!

Pray for Pope Benedict XVI!
