In a landmark decision, France has amended its constitution to guarantee abortion rights.

The change, which marks France as the first nation to constitutionally protect abortion rights, led to a wave of reactions from the Vatican and French Catholic bishops calling for the protection of life.

The Vatican’s Pontifical Academy for Life strongly opposed the amendment, asserting the importance of protecting life at all stages. “In the era of universal human rights, there cannot be a ‘right’ to taking a human life,” the Academy said. They urged for a global prioritization of life’s protection and to address the vulnerable’s needs with compassion and support.

French bishops echoed this sentiment, encouraging Catholics to remain steadfast in their support for life and for those facing difficult circumstances. “As Catholics, we must always remain servants of the life of each and all, from conception to death,” the French Bishops’ Conference said, calling for a culture of respect and understanding towards all individuals, including those who have undergone abortions.

The inclusion of abortion rights in the French Constitution has been met with visible public reactions, including the illumination of the Eiffel Tower with “My body, My choice.”

However, Catholic leaders remain focused on fostering a society that values and protects life, calling for prayer, fasting, and action to support life-affirming choices.

Pray for the protection of life!
