Over the course of five days, the Basilica of Guadalupe in Mexico welcomed a record-breaking 11 million pilgrims, surpassing the previous attendance record set before the pandemic.
The pilgrimage took place between December 8 and December 12.
Mexico City’s Head of Government, Mrs. Claudia Sheinbaum, shared the data on the record-breaking attendance at the Virgin of Guadalupe celebration.
“According to police officers, of all the celebrations it’s the one most attended by people. It is even estimated that, in the last 24 hours, more than five million [attended].”
She also thanked all of the people who made it possible for the Virgin of Guadalupe celebration to take place without any issues, and thanked “the pilgrims for their exemplary behavior.”
MartĂ Batres, Secretary of Mexico City’s Government, reported that 250,000 people received medical aid, hydration, and food during the Virgin of Guadalupe celebration. In order to manage the large crowds, 5,400 security officers were deployed.
The previous record for the Virgin of Guadalupe celebration was set in 2019, when 10.8 million people visited the Basilica. The Basilica was closed in 2020 due to the pandemic, and access was limited in 2021, with visitors required to undergo health checks.
In 2022, a total of 20 million people visited the Basilica, with 11 million of them visiting between December 8 and December 12.
These figures make the Basilica one of the most visited religious shrines in the world!
