In 1899, Pope Leo XIII performed what he himself called the “great act” of his papacy: consecrating all humanity to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

This act crowned a devotion that began with St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a 17th-century Visitation Sister in France. St. Margaret Mary Alacoque was instrumental in spreading devotion to the Sacred Heart, famously distributing ‘badges’ bearing its image. These badges became popular symbols of protection and devotion, especially during times of plague and persecution.

Soon after St. Margaret Mary Alacoque’s death, many communities and churches embraced the devotion, consecrating themselves to the Sacred Heart.

Despite its widespread adoption among the faithful, the Vatican was initially hesitant with official recognition, showing resistance to fully endorsing the devotion for many years. This persisted until a humble nun’s profound visions.

Mary of the Divine Heart, born Maria Droste zu Vischering in 1863, was a German nun from a noble family. Early in life, Maria felt a deep spiritual calling. She joined the Sisters of the Good Shepherd, committing herself wholly to her faith and service.

While serving as Mother Superior in Porto, Portugal, Sister Mary reported experiencing visions in which Jesus requested the consecration of the world to His Sacred Heart. She conveyed these revelations in writing to Pope Leo XIII, urging him to act.

After careful consideration and theological examination, the Pope acknowledged the significance of her message. In 1899, he issued the encyclical Annum Sacrum.

That June, inspired by Sister Mary’s devotion, Pope Leo XIII solemnly consecrated the entire human race to the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
