Pope Francis marked the commencement of 2024 with a profound message during his homily at St. Peter’s Basilica: to dedicate the year to Mary. This appeal, made during the Mass for the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, emphasizes Mary’s ability to intercede on behalf of humanity.

Pope Francis said that Mary, as a divine figure, intimately understands our personal struggles and emptiness. “Who can do that, if not Mary, the Mother of fullness?”

The Pope’s message highlighted the historical significance of Mary, recalling her title as the Mother of God, established at the Council of Ephesus in A.D. 431. He said that through Mary, “the Lord, a tiny Child in his Mama’s arms, has united himself forever to our humanity.”

Pope Francis further underscored Mary’s vital role in fostering unity and peace in a world that desperately needs it. He encouraged Christians to seek Mary’s intercession in times of difficulty and isolation. “Whenever we are tempted to retreat into ourselves, let us run to her; whenever we are no longer able to untie the knots in our lives, let us seek refuge in her,” he urged.

The Pope also stressed the necessity of embracing the feminine aspect of the Church, reflecting on the essential role of women in both society and faith. He called for respect and esteem for women, aligning with his consistent advocacy for women’s roles in theology and the Church.

Concluding his homily, Pope Francis entrusted the New Year to Mary’s maternal love and guidance. He says to welcome Mary into our lives is not just an act of devotion, but a fundamental aspect of faith.

Mary, Mother of God, pray for us!
