In his Angelus address on December 31, 2023, Pope Francis marked the first anniversary of Pope Benedict XVI’s passing with a moving tribute. Speaking to the faithful from the Apostolic Palace, Pope Francis reflected on the enduring spiritual influence of his predecessor.

Pope Francis described Benedict XVI as having “lovingly and wisely” served the Church.

He emphasized the collective affection, gratitude, and admiration felt for Benedict XVI, stating, “From heaven, he blesses us and accompanies us.” This sentiment was echoed by the thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square, responding with applause.

Earlier in the day, a commemorative Mass, led by Archbishop Georg Gänswein, Benedict’s longtime secretary, also took place in St. Peter’s Basilica. Archbishop Gänswein, during his homily, touched upon the late Pope’s profound prayer life and his unique relationship with Christmas, his favorite day of the year.

In his homily, Archbishop Gänswein recalled Benedict XVI’s final words as reigning pope: “The Lord is calling me ‘to scale the mountain,’ to devote myself even more to prayer and meditation.” This reflected Benedict XVI’s contemplative approach to faith, especially post-resignation.

Pope Benedict XVI, remembered for his theological insights and his historic decision to resign in 2013, passed away on December 31, 2022, at 95. His legacy as a leading contemporary theologian and his years as “pope emeritus” continue to resonate within the Church.

Pray for Pope Benedict XVI!
