Did you know that Pope Francis has not directly been the main celebrant of a public Mass for over two years?

Although Pope Francis’ personal surgeon says he is in “good health,” he does have the normal “aches and pains of an 87-year-old.”

Unable to walk or stand upright for long periods of time at the altar, Pope Francis has been the presider, instead of the main celebrant, of public masses, for the past couple of years.

According to General Instruction of the Roman Missal 92, when “the Bishop does not celebrate the Eucharist but has assigned it to someone else to do this, then it is appropriate that he should preside over the Liturgy of the Word, wearing the pectoral cross, stole, and cope over an alb, and that he should give the blessing at the end of Mass.”

May of 2022 is Pope Francis’ most recent public Mass where he was the main celebrant, a canonization Mass for 10 Saints.
