The Vatican has released the first photo of Pope Francis since his hospitalization.
The image shows Pope Francis seated before the altar of his private chapel, concelebrating Mass.
This marks the first visual confirmation of Pope Francis’ condition since his admission for bronchitis, later complicated by double pneumonia. The Vatican previously released an audio message from Pope Francis on March 6, in which he thanked the faithful for their ongoing prayers.
This photo also represents a notable moment as Pope Francis concelebrated Mass himself, differing from earlier reports of him participating or receiving the Eucharist.
Throughout his hospitalization, Pope Francis has maintained a routine of prayer, rest and limited work. This past Sunday was reserved for quiet recovery. The Pope’s clinical status is now described as stable, with ongoing respiratory and physical therapy.
Reflecting on his condition, Pope Francis said: “Our bodies are weak, but even like this nothing can prevent us from loving, praying, giving ourselves, being for each other in faith shining signs of hope.”
The Vatican has reported receiving hundreds of extra pounds of mail each day, comprising letters, drawings and messages from children, schools and religious groups. Many of these messages included prayers and heartfelt greetings from sick children wishing the Pope a speedy recovery.
