The cause for canonization of Sister Clare Crockett, a nun from Derry, Northern Ireland, is set to open on January 12, 2025, in Madrid, Spain. The ceremony at the Cathedral of Alcalá de Henares will mark the first step toward her potential sainthood.

Sister Clare, who was 33 at the time of her death, belonged to the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother. She died in 2016 during a 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Ecuador while teaching at a school that collapsed.

Before embracing religious life, she was a promising actress with little interest in faith. Her life took a dramatic turn during a Holy Week retreat in Spain in 2000, where she felt a profound call to serve God.

Her inspiring story has led to widespread devotion and numerous requests for her canonization. Father Gerard Mongan, her parish priest in Derry said “she has already brought countless people back to the practice of their faith,” reported Aleteia and OSV News.

The Servant Sisters have appointed Sister Kristen Gardner as the postulator for the cause, initiating an intensive review of Sister Clare’s life and virtues.
