James Earl Jones, the celebrated actor known for his commanding voice and diverse roles on stage and screen, passed away on September 9 at his home in Dutchess County, New York. He was 93. His agent confirmed that Jones died surrounded by loved ones.

Jones, who overcame a childhood stutter, became one of the most distinguished voices in film history, providing the voice for characters such as Darth Vader in “Star Wars” and Mufasa in “The Lion King.” In addition to his many accolades, including an honorary Oscar, Jones earned a rare “EGOT” status by winning Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony awards.

A Catholic convert, Jones often reflected on his faith’s significance in his life.

“The only thing I had that was not geared toward the art of killing was the Catholic Church, to which I had converted in the Army,” he told The New York Times in 1987. He later recorded an audio version of the Bible, which he regarded as one of his greatest honors.

Jones is survived by his first wife, Julienne Marie, and his son, Flynn Earl Jones. Funeral arrangements are yet to be announced.

This day was also the feast of Saint Peter Claver, patron to Black Catholics.
