On February 3rd, a train derailment near the town of East Palestine, Ohio caused a major ecological disaster.

The Norfolk Southern train, which was carrying approximately 150 cars, had 20 cars carrying hazardous materials, including vinyl chloride, that caught fire. The Environmental Protection Agency reported that the fire released toxic fumes and caused a massive smoke plume that led to widespread evacuations. The area surrounding the crash site was evacuated, and questions about the air and water quality near the crash site remained.

Bishop David Bonnar of the Diocese of Youngstown in a statement on February 5th said:

“Given the magnitude of this event, it is miraculous that there were no fatalities or injuries. I cannot help but think that the Blessed Mother was watching over this community. I ask for continued prayers for the health and safety of all involved.”

Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, located in East Palestine, was within the evacuation zone. However, the church decided to turn this unfortunate event into an opportunity to help those in need.

The church plans on hosting a free, open-to-all community meal on February 18th, and the church hall was open to those affected by the train derailment from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday through Wednesday, providing them with food, water, cleaning supplies, and diapers.

The church wrote on Facebook:

“Inviting all police officers, firefighters, EMS, everyone welcome. Take a break and come enjoy some downtime. Please pass the word!”

Pastor of the parishes of St. Jude and Our Lady of Lourdes Father David Misbrener wrote in a parish bulletin on February 12th that Bishop Bonnar reached out to him.

“Bishop Bonnar was the first person who called me after the accident happened. I spoke with the bishop twice, both on Saturday and Sunday, and I think it is important for all of you to know the pastoral care and concern he had for us.”

Pray for those affected by the derailment!
