Beginning December 1, new translations of texts used during Eucharistic adoration and Communion outside Mass will be implemented in parishes across the United States.
The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops approved the updated translation of the ritual book Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharistic Mystery Outside Mass in November 2021.
The Vatican confirmed the translation for liturgical use on March 7, 2023, allowing optional use starting September 14, with mandatory implementation by December 1.
Key updates include new English translations of traditional hymns like “O Salutaris Hostia” and “Tantum Ergo Sacramentum,” aiming for standardization across parishes. The revised text also provides clearer instructions for combining the Liturgy of the Hours with Eucharistic adoration.
Father David R. Price explained to OSV News that “this is a new translation … it’s not a new ritual book.”
The new translation replaces the previous version approved in 1976 and seeks to harmonize Eucharistic practices throughout the country.
