In an announcement on July 9th, 2023, Pope Francis revealed plans to elevate 21 leaders to the College of Cardinals at a consistory slated for September 30th.
The consistory is strategically scheduled before the Synod on Synodality in October.
Among the new cardinals are figures from different corners of the world, including Bishop Stephen Chriw Sau-yan from Hong Kong and Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Pierbattista Pizzaballa. Another noteworthy name is Archbishop Christophe Pierre, serving as the Pope’s envoy in the U.S. since 2016.
Several Vatican Dicasteries’ heads are also on the list. These include Archbishop Victor Manuel Fernandez, who leads the Doctrine of the Faith, Archbishop Robert Francis Prevost for Bishops, and Archbishop Claudio Gugerotti for Oriental Churches. Prevost, originally from Chicago, served in Peru before his Vatican role.
Another inclusion is Ángel Fernández Artime, a priest who is the rector-major of the Salesian Order. Also, the Pope has recognized three cardinals beyond the voting age for their dedicated service to the Church.
After announcing the news, Pope Francis urged the faithful to pray for these new Cardinals.
He emphasized their crucial role in supporting his ministry and ensuring the Church’s faithful are well-cared for.
Pray for the Pope’s intentions!
