Archbishop Giovanni Ricchiuti, the head of the Italian arm of Pax Christi, has raised a sharp rebuke against the U.S. government’s decision to arm Ukraine with cluster bombs.
The Vatican has persistently objected to such weaponry, highlighting their indiscriminate harm to civilians.
“The decision to supply Ukraine with cluster bombs is horrifying and tragic,” Ricchiuti stated.
The Archbishop’s recent firsthand experience in Ukraine, where he observed the effects of cluster bomb use, underscores the urgency of his warnings. “Retaliating against war crimes with more atrocities doesn’t bring us closer to peace,” he opined.
“War in itself is a crime against humanity,” Ricchiuti added, highlighting the inherent contradiction in their stance.
As for the Catholic Church’s future role, the Archbishop outlined an active involvement beyond mere humanitarian aid.
Despite resistance from several quarters, he asserted that the Church’s voice – a call for peace – needs to be heard loud and clear.
Urging the Church to engage for peace and non-violence, Ricchiuti emphasized that “Peace is prophecy for us Christians.”
